Russian Tales adapted by Johnny Hanrahan
Two Stories - One World
The Overcoat, by comic genius Gogol, tells the tale of a slow-witted clerk who saves his pennies for a whole year in order to buy a new overcoat only to have it torn from his back by mocking younger colleagues.
The Double has the same setting – a harsh world of bureaucratic routine, which gives way by night to feverish dreams and wild romantic escapades. In this black comedy Mr. Nobody begins to encounter his own Double who gradually takes over every aspect of his life.
Meridian have made a single theatrical event of these two classics, a single imaginative world combining high comedy with a mysterious blend of lyricism, horror and social commentary. A beautiful original score, part acoustic, part electronic, amplifies the huge range of emotional adventures undertaken by these ‘insignificant’ characters.
“the direction by Sarah Alexander hones a strong cast into excellent ensemble playing” Mary Leland, The Irish Times.
“Akaky is played by Kieran Ahern with a powerful sense of spiritual erosion and private humiliation” Mary O’Donnell, The Sunday Tribune.
“Johnny Hanrahan has accomplished the delicate task of adapting Gogol’s story with considerable originality, while remaining true to its essential anarchic humour.”
Francine Cunningham, The Sunday Business Post
