The Mistress of Silence by Jacqueline Harpman
The Mistress of Silence is an extraordinary multi-media theatre event in which the surreal world of dreams and nightmares created by Jacqueline Harpman in her award winning novel is brought to vivid life with live performance, live and recorded music, radical lighting and a complete high-tech sound world.
It tells the story of a girl, brought up in a prison bunker in the company of forty older women. Liberated mysteriously, the band of women then roam a plain searching unsuccessfully for “civilisation”. The landscape is bizarre, hallucinatory; the emotional world of isolation and yearning is instantly recognisable. In the startling imagery of this piece simple, mundane, human experience is celebrated, giving an epic grandeur to the everyday battle to cope with inevitable pain and loss.
“It’s an impressive piece of theatricality, excellently directed by Hanrahan and John Browne” Emer O’Kelly, The Sunday Independent.
“Moxley is superb, especially when recalling the savage energy of her youth … an intense experience, disorientating but surprisingly powerful.” Gerry McCarthy, The Sunday Times.
“a challenging and ambitious piece of theatre” Jocelyn Clarke, The Sunday Tribune.
