MERIDIAN THEATRE COMPANY PRESENTS
There Are Little Kingdoms
By Kevin Barry.
Directed by Brian Desmond.
A day in the life of an unnamed Irish town. A comic cruise through a magical world of pool-hall legends, wife-swapping Casanovas, fast girls and faster cars, prescription drugs, shoulders dislocated by love and windscreens smashed below in the square. Not to mention the taxi-driver who can tell you how you'll die or the quare fella running the chipper who does a savage turn at Roy Orbison.
This is Under Milk Wood for the Irish Badlands circa 2008, a bittersweet comedy of misfits and losers, fantasists and sexy young psychopaths all leaping off the pages of Barry's 2007 Rooney prize winning book of stories.
In this sparkling adaptation, the stories cut across and swirl around one another as a series of scenes, monologues and songs contributing to a night of killer "turns." Seven actors directed by Brian Desmond (Thailand, Love, Peace& Robbery) create multiple little kingdoms where there is vast entertainment but also a dark satire of the shiny Ireland where terms and conditions always apply.
"Could easily have been titled 'These Are Little Masterpieces'... Barry gathers all the bewildered exasperation that Irish playwrights from Tom Murphy to Marina Carr and Enda Walsh have identified, and brings it, most brilliantly, to his dark, blackly hilarious and horrifically realistic narratives."
