The Exit Wound
When JFK's head exploded in Dallas, Texas, blown to bits by an unknown number of bullets, the whole world felt the shock. A page turned in history. One era ended, another began and the images of that day; the ghastly head injuries, the pink blood-stained suit, the secret service men scrambling on the fender of the open black car, the cavalcade hurtling to the hospital, the impromptu inauguration of LBJ are etched on the memory of a generation as deeply as the searing sights and sounds of 9/11.
For most, this event was a collective tragedy, a deeply emotional but nonetheless public event. In The Exit Wound we encounter characters who have been marked for life by their tragic experiences of that day; characters for whom collective and personal tragedy are still interwoven and alive after four decades.
An itinerant singer/storyteller returning to his family for the first time since 1963; a woman released at last from the burden of nursing her sister; a TV celebrity for whom the events of that day remain the most compelling show he has ever been in.
The Exit Wound is a promenade play in three parts: each in a different space in Triskel Arts Centre. The three intense central stories are supported by a chorus of performers in their 60's and 70's and a subtle soundscore which blends material from Kennedy's speeches and the reports of his assassination with music of the era which has key significance for the characters to create a theatrical reality, as real and as compelling as the memories of the characters themselves.
