Crystal by Johnny Hanrahan
Crystal, the girl with the bleeding hands, begging for help in the middle of the Western Road as hundreds of cars drive around her. Mr Pongo, the timid, reclusive librarian who watches her suffer but can’t lift a finger to help her. Eilis, the woman in whose chest the cage of little birds goes wild as the sight of blood and the girl’s distress drive her heartbeat wild with uncontrollable anxiety. Joe, just back from England for whom Crystal appears to be a vivid hallucination in a town that has become for him a place of lost dreams and haunting memories.
These are some of the characters who tell us their stories in this daring piece of promenade theatre which uses the aisles and gathering places of the English Market (“The Womb of Cork”) to highlight the ways in which the vivid inner lives of many different people can all be touched and changed by a single, shocking event in public space.
All these monologues are based on true stories gathered in Meridian’s What’s the Story? Project which is creating a ‘mountain of memory’, hundreds of true stories of all kinds offered to us by the people of Cork.
